Blue Note Therapeutics / attune / Product evolution
Making room for group conversations in attune.
We helped Blue Note Therapeutics extend attune with group communication, patient-centered navigation and a reworked technical foundation.

01 / The challenge
A shared experience within a personal journey.
Blue Note Therapeutics was developing a mobile experience for people living with cancer. The product needed to bring group communication into an existing self-paced program, with attention to the people participating and the setting in which they would use it.
More about the challenge
The task reached beyond adding a chat feature. Group identity, respectful discussion, discoverability and the relationship between the session roadmap and conversation all shaped the experience.

Enhanced onboarding
We expanded the onboarding flow to support group communication with new fields like photo/avatar and condition information to promote trust and empathy among participants, and to facilitate the possibility of customized segmentation in future groups.
03 / Inside the work
Bring the group into the product.
We worked with Blue Note to understand the scheduled sessions and facilitation behind the group model. User research identified a need for communication between participants alongside the existing program.
Design and engineering needed to develop together: new interactions had to fit the patient journey while the application and delivery environment evolved.

Enabling inclusive conversations
With accessibility and equity in mind, we developed group discussion prompts designed to resonate with patients from many backgrounds. We participated in feedback sessions with focus groups of diverse patients, clinicians, and advocates to craft prompts with content, tone, and language that would be understandable, relevant, and respectful to attune users.

A better way(finding)
To optimize the user experience, we created a navigation structure that forwards the patientâs therapeutic journey while making other important features discoverable and accessible. By configuring key elements in standard iOS patterns, we enabled participants to easily move back and forth between the session roadmap and the group chat forum, without losing focus or motivation.

QMS partnership for regulatory quality
We worked with a third-party quality management system (QMS) to develop and maintain software products within a formally documented software development environment.
07 / A product decision
Re-engineered for success
We restructured the earlier application using TypeScript across the front and back ends, introduced automated builds and developed infrastructure as code. This engineering work supported the evolving product rather than treating the group experience as an isolated addition.
08 / Our contribution
A group experience.
An engineering foundation.
Blue Note brought the therapeutic program and the people who understood its delivery. We worked with patients, clinicians and advocates on the group experience, from onboarding and discussion prompts to navigation between sessions and conversation.
Our engineering contribution included TypeScript across the application, automated builds and infrastructure as code. Work within a documented QMS environment connected product changes with the development process around them.
Under the surface: how this project was built
Mobile experience
React Native supported the mobile application and its group interactions.
Application services
TypeScript and Nest.js connected the application with patient-management and prescription systems.
Build and infrastructure
AWS CDK and CloudFormation described infrastructure in code, alongside automated builds and multiple environments.
